Council of Ontario Universities Launch Report on Experiential Learning

Bonnie Patterson, President and CEO of the Council of Ontario Universities (COU) launched their report Bringing Life to Learning at the University of Toronto on March 26th. Minister Brad Duguid (MTCU), Lucy Fromowitz, AVP Student Life at U of T, Maryon Erkhart, Senior Manager and Talent Acquisition at TD Bank and recent U of T Urban Studies graduate, Erin Kang were also present to highlight the importance of practical experience for students through internships, co-op programs and community service learning placements. The COU Report released says applied learning is one of the fastest-growing areas for universities in Ontario. The benefits of these programs reach far beyond the individual experience – many thousands of students have found full-time employment in their fields of study as a result of the experiential learning opportunities gained during their university education. Statistics Canada’s most recent National Graduate Survey shows graduates with a bachelor degree and co-op experience earn more than peers. They also have higher full-time employment rates and are more likely to pay off their debt within two years. The Report on Bringing Life to Learning is available online [www.cou.on.ca].
